For the second consecutive day, the Sensex and Nifty 50 decline.

Following weak global cues, the Indian stock market benchmarks, the Sensex and the Nifty 50, closed Monday, May 19, down, extending losses for the second straight session. The Nifty 50 ended the day at 24,944.45, down 75 points, or 0.30 percent, while the Sensex closed 271 points, or 0.33 percent, lower at 82,059.42.


As the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices increased 0.27 percent and 0.75 percent, respectively, the mid- and small-cap categories maintained their superior performance.


The volatility indicator, India VIX, increased by about 5% as the Nifty 50 fell below the 25,000 barrier, suggesting a cautious market mood.
